Michael Yip

Michael Yip is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC San Diego, Director of the Advanced Robotics and Controls Laboratory (ARCLab). He is an expert in surgical and humanoid robots, as well as robot learning.  

His research has received numerous best paper awards at top robotics and AI conferences, and Dr. Yip has been recognized by the NSF CAREER award, NIH Trailblazer award, and as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. He has both built several companies in robotics and medtech, and has mentored former students towards starting their own deep-tech and medtech startups. In 2024, he was named the Faculty Innovator of the Year at UC San Diego and elected into the U.S. National Academy of Inventors as a Senior Member. 

Dr. Yip is also a former Disney Imagineer and Faculty Consultant to Amazon Robotics, and has been a expert consultant for other Forbes 100 companies. His degrees are in Mechatronics Engineering (BS), Electrical Engineering (MS), and Bioengineering (PhD) from U. Waterloo, UBC, and Stanford University, respectively.
