Weijie Su is a Professor in the Wharton Statistics and Data Science Department at the University of Pennsylvania and Co-Director of Penn Research in Machine Learning. He also holds courtesy appointments in Computer and Information Science, Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics, and Mathematics. His research focuses on the statistical foundations of artificial intelligence and machine learning, with particular interests in large language models, privacy-preserving machine learning, high-dimensional statistics, mathematical optimization, and deep learning theory.

His work explores how mathematical and statistical methods can help us better understand modern AI systems. Recent areas of research include the behavior and alignment of large language models, statistical methods for protecting data privacy, and the theory behind deep learning and optimization. His research has received numerous distinctions, including the 2026 COPSS Presidents’ Award, and he was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 2025.

Dr. Su received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2016 and his B.S. from Peking University in 2011. In addition to his research and teaching, he serves as the founding co-editor of Statistical Learning and Data Science and has held editorial roles with several leading journals in statistics, machine learning, and operations research.
